The Romeo and Juliet Project: NEA Jazz Master DAVE LIEBMAN, jazz trumpet virtuoso Greg Gisbert, and DownBeat Award-winning UNC Jazz Lab Band I will come together for the WORLD PREMIERE of the Romeo and Juliet Project. This incredible work, commissioned by UNC Jazz Studies, will feature pieces set to the story of Romeo and Juliet by acclaimed jazz composers from throughout the United States.

Dave Liebman: NEA Jazz Master David Liebman is considered a renaissance man in contemporary music with a career stretching nearly fifty years. He has played with masters including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner and others. Downbeat Magazine recognizes him as being “among the most important saxophonists in contemporary music . . a leader and artist of integrity and independent direction.”

Greg Gisbert: Originally from Denver, trumpeter Greg Gisbert has firmly established himself as one of the most sought-after and well-respected artists in jazz today. He has recorded and performed with jazz greats including Buddy Rich, Clark Terry, Horace Silver, Maynard Ferguson, Bobby Shew, John Fedchok, Harry Connick, Jr., Jim McNeely, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Nancy Wilson. He has been an integral player with the Maria Schneider and Vanguard Jazz Orchestras, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. Gisbert has served on the faculty of the University of Miami and the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts.
